Cables are under tension whenever the door is down. When one lets go it shows up straight away.
The door is hanging at an angle
One cable has come off its drum, so that side has nothing holding it and the door has gone crooked in the opening.
A cable is loose or coiled on the floor
The cable has unwound off the drum. The door is now held by one side only and should be left alone.
Frayed or rusted strands
Cables fray from the bottom bracket up. Once strands are broken the rest goes without much warning.
The door is stuck part way
A jammed or wrapped cable stops the drum turning, so the door stops wherever it was.
Grinding at the top corners
The cable is riding wrong on the drum and cutting into it, which damages the drum as well.
The door drops fast when released
Cable and spring tension are no longer holding the weight. Keep people and cars out from under it.
Cable Repair
Garage Door Cable Repair in New York
A lift cable runs from the bottom bracket up to a drum on the spring shaft. The bottom bracket is under the full tension of the door, which is exactly why cable work is not a job to try with the springs still loaded.
We release the tension properly, replace both cables so they stretch at the same rate, reseat the drums square and reset spring tension before testing the balance.
What the job includes
Both lift cables replaced together, not just the broken one
Drums inspected for cuts and grooving, replaced if the cable has chewed them
Bottom brackets and bearing plates checked while tension is released
Spring tension reset and the drums re-timed so the door runs level
Rollers and track alignment checked at the same time
Door balance tested by hand before the opener is reconnected
How We Repair a Cable
Cables are only touched once the tension around them is controlled.
1
Secure the door first
The door is locked down and the springs checked before any cable work starts. Cables under tension are dangerous to touch blind.
2
Release spring tension
Tension is taken off the system in a controlled way so the cable and drum can be worked on safely.
3
Replace both cables
Cables are replaced as a pair, sized to the exact drop and drum of your door.
4
Reseat and re-time the drums
Drums are set so the door lifts evenly on both sides, not crooked.
5
Restore tension and test
Springs are re-tensioned and the door is tested by hand for level travel before power is reconnected.
6
Run a full cycle check
The opener is reconnected and the door is run through several cycles to confirm it tracks straight.

Why Century
New York’s garage doors, handled by one company
Century is not a lead broker passing your address to whoever bids for it. Our own technicians run the calls, in our own vans, with parts already on board.
We cover New York City and the surrounding boroughs, on everything from a single family garage to a brownstone carriage door or a commercial roll up gate. Same crews, same trucks, and the same way of pricing a job on every call.
Our own technicians, not subcontractors
Every technician is on our payroll, in a marked van, and trained on the brands we install. You are not handed off to a stranger, and the person who quotes the job is the person who does it.
A written price before anything is touched
The technician inspects the door, then hands you a written price covering parts and labor. You approve it and work starts. The number does not change halfway through the job.
Springs, cables and openers stocked on the van
Torsion and extension springs, cables, drums, rollers, bearings and opener units ride on the van, so most repairs are finished on the first visit instead of waiting on an order.
BBB accredited, licensed and insured
Accredited with the Better Business Bureau, fully licensed and insured, with a 5.0 rating from over 4,000 Google reviews.
All five boroughs, seven days a week
Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. Weekends and holidays included, on residential garages and commercial roll up doors.
Search for a garage door repair and half the results are brokers reselling your number. Here is our sequence, in order.
1
A person picks up
One number, answered by a live operator around the clock. You describe what the door is doing.
2
You get a window
An arrival window, then a text when the truck actually leaves for your address.
3
Full inspection first
The technician inspects the whole door before quoting anything. Springs, cables, rollers, tracks, opener and balance.
4
Price before tools
A written price before a tool comes out of the van. You approve it, then work starts. Not the other way round.
